Overview

Payroll Specialist will own multi-state payroll processing for a growing government contracting organization serving 500+ employees across multiple entities. The role blends payroll operations with compliance and partnering with HR and finance teams. You will operate from our McLean VA headquarters on a hybrid schedule, two to three days in the office. This position emphasizes accuracy, regulatory knowledge, and collaboration to support audits and leadership reporting.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Build and process semi-monthly payroll for 550–600 employees across multiple entities with accuracy and on-time delivery
  • 2Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations including multi-state and union requirements
  • 3Reconcile payroll, general ledger entries, and benefit deductions to ensure data integrity
  • 4Coordinate with HR on employee data changes and transfers across states
  • 5Collaborate with management to ensure timely completion of timecards for payroll processing
  • 6Manage garnishments, levies, and other withholdings and respond to related inquiries
  • 7Support internal and external audits including DCAA audits as applicable
  • 8Prepare payroll reports for leadership and finance and assist with year-end tax document distribution
  • 9Ensure compliance with all state filings and payroll-related applications
  • 10Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and implement best practices

Requirements12

  • 1At least 3 years of payroll processing experience in a multi-state environment
  • 2Strong understanding of payroll laws, regulations, and compliance requirements
  • 3Experience processing payroll for mid- to large-sized populations (200+ employees)
  • 4Hands-on experience with ADP Workforce Now payroll platform
  • 5Experience with Deltek Costpoint
  • 6High attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • 7Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
  • 8Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., reconciliations, data analysis)
  • 9Preferred: experience processing payroll in a multi-entity environment
  • 10Preferred: experience in a government contracting environment or with union payroll
  • 11Preferred: familiarity with DCAA compliance requirements
  • 12Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation
