Coatings Chemist, Architectural Paints & Formulation
Overview
Coatings Chemist will own the formulation and testing of architectural paints at scale in an applications laboratory. You will develop new paint formulations, optimize existing products, and support customer needs while collaborating with scientists and technicians. You will contribute to innovation projects, ensure quality and environmental responsibility, and maintain rigorous records. This role emphasizes hands-on lab work and strict safety practices in a collaborative, mentorship‑driven environment.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build and test architectural paint formulations by selecting resins pigments additives and solvents to achieve adhesion durability color and gloss
- 2Test new architectural paint materials in the lab to evaluate performance quality and consistency
- 3Conduct viscosity measurements drawdowns on substrates and stain resistance and application testing
- 4Provide technical support for key innovation projects contributing to new product development and improvement of existing formulations
- 5Support customer service activities by offering technical insight and troubleshooting related to paint and coating performance
- 6Perform hands-on experimental work to generate reliable repeatable test data and results
- 7Collaborate with scientists and technicians to plan coordinate and execute laboratory work and experiments
- 8Ensure laboratory safety by following established safety procedures and best practices
- 9Maintain accurate records of formulations test conditions and results to support development and quality control
- 10Consider environmental impact and regulatory requirements when developing and testing new formulations
Requirements8
- 15+ years hands-on paint or coating laboratory experience
- 2Diploma with 5+ years of hands-on paint or coating laboratory experience
- 3Associate degree with 2+ years of hands-on paint or coating laboratory experience
- 4Bachelor’s degree with 0+ years of hands-on paint or coating laboratory experience co-op or internship preferred
- 5Background in polymer chemistry or related disciplines
- 6Experience specifically with architectural paint preferred
- 7Strong attention to detail and ability to generate reliable high-quality experimental data
- 8Interest in innovation and contributing to new product development in coatings industry
