Own the creation of custom patinas and metal finishes for high-end architectural projects at M. Cohen and Sons. You'll work in a metal shop with stainless steel, bronze, and aluminum substrates, applying corrosive chemicals and HVLP spray guns to achieve exacting client specs. Collaborate with project managers and executives to understand each unique finish requirement. What You'll Do10

  • 1Apply corrosive chemicals and acids to age, distress, and texturize metal surfaces for custom architectural finishes.
  • 2Operate orbital sanders, Scotch Brite, and steel wool on steel, stainless, bronze, and aluminum for surface prep.
  • 3Maintain and use HVLP spray gun systems like SATAjet to apply clearcoats and paints.
  • 4Mask and protect parts with tape before treatments.
  • 5Pre-treat and clean metal surfaces using chemical or mechanical methods such as grinding.
  • 6Apply hot and cold patinas including silver nitrate, liver of sulfur, hydrogen peroxide, ferric nitrate, and cupric nitrate.
  • 7Paint or powder-coat custom parts using powder coat systems such as Metallic, Epoxy, Polyester, Urethane, Zinc Rich, and Fluoropolymer.
  • 8Perform quality control checks, including adhesion testing and troubleshooting coating issues.
  • 9Stage and hang material on racks, use trolley systems or forklifts to move parts, and rig heavy sections.
  • 10Track project timelines, prepare samples, and maintain a clean, safe work area.

Requirements10

  • 12+ years in metal finishing and 1+ year in patina work (required).
  • 2Knowledge of surface preparation methods and adhesion testing.
  • 3Ability to read architectural drawings.
  • 4Experience with Kynar and Duranar architectural coatings.
  • 5Preferred use of Cerakote, Caswell, Birchwood, or Triple S Chemical products.
  • 6NACE Certified or knowledge of AAMA warranties and NOMMA guidelines.
  • 7Experience in coating spray booths or powder booths.
  • 8Ability to distinguish colors for tinting and faux finishing.
  • 9Forklift certification is a plus.
  • 10Knowledge of conversion coating, sandblasting, and zinc primers is a plus.
