Overview

You will own the fabrication of one-of-a-kind architectural metalwork for high-end residential projects, from raw material to final assembly. At Heritage Metalworks, an award-winning studio in Philadelphia, you will build custom stair systems, gates, railings, lighting, and hardware that cannot be bought off the shelf. You will work independently in a fully equipped shop with dedicated blacksmith, foundry, and finishing bays, collaborating with designers and engineers. This role is for a master craftsperson who takes pride in museum-quality work and thrives on unique challenges.

What You'll Do8

  • 1Build custom architectural metalwork from shop drawings, engineering prints, and sketches, handling layout, forming, welding, and finishing.
  • 2Plan fabrication sequences and devise methods for each unique project, from material selection to final assembly.
  • 3Operate manual lathes, mills, brakes, shears, rollers, and saws to shape steel, stainless, bronze, brass, copper, and aluminum.
  • 4Perform TIG, oxy-fuel, brazing, and soldering to produce visible welds that require minimal cleanup.
  • 5Shape metal using forging, rolling, bending, and cutting techniques to realize intricate designs.
  • 6Finish exposed surfaces through grinding, polishing, texturing, and patinas to achieve flawless appearance.
  • 7Troubleshoot fabrication challenges and propose practical solutions without constant supervision.
  • 8Coordinate with project teams to maintain design intent and schedule, while mentoring junior fabricators when needed.

Requirements7

  • 15+ years of hands-on architectural metal fabrication experience, with a portfolio of custom work.
  • 2Skilled in TIG welding, brazing, silver soldering, and soft soldering.
  • 3Ability to independently set up and operate manual lathes, vertical mills, ironworkers, brakes, shears, and rollers.
  • 4Experience with steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper, and aluminum.
  • 5Proficient in precision layout and maintaining tight tolerances.
  • 6Valid driver's license and ability to lift 75 lbs.
  • 720/20 vision (corrected or uncorrected) and excellent hand-eye coordination.
