Lab Technician, Chemical Testing & Polyurethane
Overview
You will own formulation development and quality testing for polyurethane products at Carpenter Co., a leader in foam and chemical manufacturing. You will verify reactivity profiles and physical properties, prepare lab-scale formulas, and operate titration equipment for critical chemical measurements. You will work alongside a small team in a hands-on, lab-focused role in Rochester Hills, MI, with direct impact on product consistency. What You'll Do8
- 1Drive formulation development projects by preparing polyurethane samples and testing reactivity profiles using titration and physical property methods.
- 2Perform chemical testing on wet samples to confirm correct formulas, analyzing for OH, NCO, H2O, and blowing agent content.
- 3Operate and calibrate lab equipment including Karl Fisher titration devices, viscometers, and other general lab instruments.
- 4Record results in databases, create spreadsheets, and maintain accurate records using Microsoft Excel.
- 5Organize and maintain the lab area, including ordering supplies and managing inventory.
- 6Prepare and update quality reports and work instructions, ensuring compliance with OSHA and internal safety procedures.
- 7Report discrepancies or out-of-normal conditions to the supervisor, and participate in team problem-solving and continuous improvement activities.
- 8Collaborate with other departments and support cross-functional testing as needed.
Requirements8
- 1Associate degree in Science, Chemistry preferred
- 21-3 years of quality lab experience, preferably in an industrial setting
- 3Experience with polymers a plus
- 4Experience operating Karl Fisher titration equipment, viscometers, and standard lab equipment
- 5Strong communication skills, both written and oral
- 6Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- 7Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
- 8Ability to follow OSHA safety and environmental procedures, including wearing PPE in a manufacturing environment
