Teacher Assistant, Early Childhood Education & Head Start
Overview
Teacher Assistant supports classroom instruction under the Teacher and reports to the Assistant Director of Educational Services in a Head Start setting. They assist with activities that foster intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development for all students and may assume full instructional responsibilities in the Teacher’s absence. The role emphasizes collaboration with families, maintaining a safe environment, and documenting progress while upholding confidentiality and professional standards. This position offers exposure to curriculum development, IEP/ICP support, and a mission-driven education team.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build positive relationships with children and parents to foster a collaborative classroom culture
- 2Design and deliver activities that support each child’s learning goals and social development
- 3Assist with curriculum preparation and lesson planning to align with individual needs
- 4Monitor safety and maintain appropriate teacher/child ratios throughout the day
- 5Assist with documenting observations, anecdotes, and progress notes for each child
- 6Support the social/emotional curriculum and implement behavior strategies with positive redirection
- 7Gather and post materials at eye level and maintain an inviting learning environment
- 8Attend two required center conferences and contribute to IEP/ICP goals
- 9Support teachers with evaluation, assessment, and data entry for reporting
- 10Maintain confidentiality and professional appearance and communication with staff and families
Requirements10
- 1High School Diploma or equivalent required
- 2Preferred: Associate degree and Completion of Child Development Credential Program within one year
- 3Six semester hours in Child Development or Ninety clock hours of approved training if the credential not completed
- 4Minimum one year experience in a licensed childcare center or equivalent
- 5Strong math and analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and data reporting
- 6CPR and First Aid certification required
- 7Must obtain and renew a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential within 2 years and apply within introductory period
- 8Must complete state required background checks and health clearances
- 9Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and engage in moderate physical activity
- 10Active participation in Head Start mission and team-based work environments
