Overview
As a Head Start Assistant Teacher at Self Help Inc., you'll co-lead a preschool classroom in Boston, supporting up to 20 children from diverse backgrounds. What You'll Do10
- 1Co-lead classroom activities that support social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development for preschool children, following the Head Start framework.
- 2Set up and maintain a welcoming classroom that encourages exploration and learning, with materials ready for daily use.
- 3Guide small groups in skill-building activities, providing individualized support to meet each child's needs.
- 4Supervise children during indoor and outdoor play, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
- 5Support meal and snack times, modeling healthy eating habits and encouraging positive social interaction.
- 6Implement positive guidance techniques to help children develop self-regulation and social skills.
- 7Assist with personal care routines, including toileting and diapering, following health and safety protocols.
- 8Track and document child progress with attendance records, observations, and anecdotal notes for the Lead Teacher.
- 9Support the implementation of IEPs for children with disabilities, collaborating with the Lead Teacher and specialists.
- 10Build respectful partnerships with families through daily communication and involvement in parent activities and workshops.
Requirements9
- 1High School Diploma or GED required; CDA credential or enrollment in an Associate's or Bachelor's program in Early Childhood Education preferred.
- 21+ years experience working with preschool-aged children, ideally in a Head Start or similar early childhood program.
- 3Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with colleagues and families from diverse backgrounds.
- 4Patience, flexibility, and a positive attitude when working with young children.
- 5Basic computer skills for record-keeping and communication.
- 6Ability to lift and carry children up to 40 lbs and participate in physical activities.
- 7Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- 8Must pass a criminal background check and obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
- 9Willingness to attend staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
