Ship Fitter, Marine Construction
Overview
As a Ship Fitter at Hutco Inc, you will own the fabrication and assembly of structural components for marine vessels in the Houston/Channelview/Baytown area. You will work in a team of skilled tradespeople, interpreting blueprints and using precision measuring tools to cut, fit, and weld steel parts. This role differs by offering hands-on certification testing and immediate project starts. You will handle physical demands, including confined spaces and heights, while maintaining safety standards.
What You'll Do8
- 1Fit and align structural steel members according to blueprints and specifications using plasma cutters, grinders, and welding equipment.
- 2Lay out and mark reference lines on plates and structural parts using soapstone, speed squares, and measuring tapes.
- 3Operate overhead cranes and forklifts to position and secure heavy components during assembly.
- 4Weld temporary braces and supports to hold assemblies in place while final welding is completed.
- 5Inspect completed work for accuracy and compliance with tolerance requirements, adjusting as needed.
- 6Work in confined spaces, climbing through manholes and traversing scaffolding to access work areas.
- 7Move materials weighing up to 50 pounds frequently and 75 pounds occasionally across distances up to 200 feet.
- 8Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following all safety protocols and wearing required PPE.
Requirements8
- 12+ years of prior experience as a Ship Fitter in a shipyard or similar environment.
- 2Pass hands-on certification tests demonstrating fitting and welding proficiency.
- 3Ability to read and interpret blueprints, symbols, and welding specifications.
- 4Proficiency with hand tools such as crescent wrenches, strikers, and soapstone.
- 5Physical capability to stand, bend, squat, and lift for extended periods in confined spaces.
- 6Comfortable working at heights on scaffolding and gangways.
- 7Must provide own tools: hard hat, gloves, steel-toe boots, measuring tape, and safety glasses.
- 8Reliable transportation to job sites in Houston and Galveston areas.
