Senior Optical Engineer, Quantum Computing
Overview
You will lead optical design for quantum computers using optically trapped neutral atoms, defining architecture for laser delivery, high-NA imaging, and optical cavities. Collaborating with mechanical engineers and physicists, you will drive subsystem design from concept to precision alignment. This role offers hands-on assembly and characterization, with the opportunity to shape critical strategic decisions in a world-class team. Join a fast-growing company at the forefront of quantum technology, where your work directly impacts breakthrough computational capabilities.
What You'll Do8
- 1Lead cross-functional partnerships with mechanical engineers and physicists to iteratively design optical subsystems for laser distribution, high numerical aperture imaging, and optical cavities.
- 2Define system architecture and make strategic decisions balancing competing requirements for performance, cost, and schedule.
- 3Create novel designs and specifications of optical systems from component level to system level, leveraging Zemax or FRED for ray-tracing and SolidWorks or Onshape for CAD.
- 4Evaluate design solutions by performing detailed tolerance and stray light analysis, ensuring robustness and manufacturability.
- 5Develop alignment procedures for optical designs, then execute hands-on assembly and precision alignment in the lab.
- 6Characterize optical subsystem performance using interferometry, beam profiling, and wavefront sensing, documenting results.
- 7Drive the build-out of optical test fixtures and processes for alignment and assembly, improving repeatability.
- 8Mentor junior engineers and contribute to design reviews, fostering a culture of excellence.
Requirements9
- 15-8+ years of optical design experience, with a Bachelor's degree in Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, or related field (advanced degree a plus).
- 24+ years of hands-on optics assembly experience in a laboratory environment, including precision alignment.
- 3Proficiency with Zemax, FRED, or equivalent ray-tracing software, including tolerance and stray light analysis.
- 4Experience with SolidWorks, Onshape, or equivalent 3D CAD design software.
- 5Experience designing high-numerical-aperture imaging systems.
- 6Project management skills and the ability to lead technical initiatives independently.
- 7High attention-to-detail and accuracy in documentation and analysis.
- 8Creative, critical thinking with ability to strategize and solve problems in a dynamic environment.
- 9Ability to work effectively in an open, collaborative environment and communicate clearly.
