Overview

You will design and develop integrated photonic components and systems for cutting-edge quantum computing platforms. Working with physicists and optical engineers, you will translate complex requirements into practical designs and validate performance through simulation, layout, fabrication, and testing. You will lead PIC development efforts, coordinate with external vendors, and mentor junior engineers. What You'll Do10

  • 1Design integrated photonic components and systems using Lumerical and RSoft to deliver and manipulate light for quantum applications.
  • 2Collaborate with architecture, physics, photonics, fabrication, and mechanical engineering teams to define system architectures and technical requirements.
  • 3Gather and refine technical requirements, translating them into actionable design plans that meet performance and manufacturability targets.
  • 4Create and refine layouts for test PICs using Klayout and GDSFactory, working with fabrication and test teams to validate performance.
  • 5Lead and coordinate PIC development efforts with external vendors to ensure timely delivery of key demonstrator systems.
  • 6Apply design-for-manufacturing principles to photonic circuits for robust and scalable production.
  • 7Work with photonics fabrication processes and metrology to evaluate materials and device performance, feeding results back into design.
  • 8Use optical and photonic systems in the lab, including setup, alignment, and troubleshooting.
  • 9Perform testing and data analysis for optical experiments, plotting and fitting models to guide design improvements.
  • 10Communicate design decisions and trade-offs clearly to stakeholders, contributing to reviews and technical documentation.

Requirements10

  • 16+ years of experience with photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design using Lumerical, RSoft, or similar guided-mode and FDTD solvers.
  • 24+ years of experience using and maintaining optical or photonic systems in a laboratory or product development environment.
  • 3Hands-on experience in photonic design and integrated circuit layout, including test PICs and complex photonic architectures.
  • 4Proficiency with photonic simulation tools (Lumerical, RSoft) for device and circuit-level modeling.
  • 5Proficiency with photonic layout tools (Klayout, GDSFactory) for creating manufacturable designs.
  • 6Broad understanding of optical principles and demonstrated application to real-world projects.
  • 7Programming experience in Matlab, Python, and C for modeling, simulation, automation, and data analysis.
  • 8Experience with testing and data analysis, including acquiring optical measurement data and interpreting results.
  • 9Experience working with cross-disciplinary teams in architecture, physics, fabrication, mechanical engineering, and photonics.
  • 10Ability to gather technical requirements and drive designs to meet performance targets.
