Overview
Exowatt seeks a technically curious Power Systems Electrical Engineer to develop and analyze complex power system models and design test strategies for advanced power conversion systems. The role involves simulating invisible grid dynamics and validating hardware against models. Based in Miami FL with potential relocation to Austin TX. Provide relocation assistance.
What You'll Do13
- 1Simulate and Model Using PSCAD/EMTDC or MATLAB/Simulink to analyze transient steady-state and dynamic phenomena
- 2Perform impact studies for Inverter-Based Resources IBRs such as generators solar and Battery Energy Storage Systems BESS
- 3Conduct Sub-Synchronous Oscillation SSO studies Control Interaction CI analysis and Transient Overvoltage TOV assessments
- 4Develop and maintain simulation environments for power electronics energy storage power conversion and grid-interactive systems
- 5Create and execute test plans test procedures and validation protocols for electrical and power system components
- 6Perform model-in-the-loop SIL hardware-in-the-loop HIL and lab-based power converter testing
- 7Validate simulation results against experimental and field data improve model fidelity over time
- 8Analyze transient fault thermal and dynamic behavior of power systems under normal and off-nominal conditions
- 9Investigate root causes of test failures and performance gaps drive corrective actions with cross-functional teams
- 10Design and automate test infrastructure data collection workflows and post-processing analysis tools
- 11Translate complex simulation and test data into clear actionable technical reports for clients utilities or internal stakeholders
- 12Support controls and firmware teams evaluate system response protections edge cases and failure modes
- 13Contribute to design reviews risk assessments and engineering decision-making throughout product development
Requirements13
- 15+ years building ETL pipelines with Spark and Airflow
- 23-5 seasons experience with PSCAD/PSSE and MATLAB/Simulink PLECS
- 32-5 years proficiency in Python or MATLAB for post-processing simulation data
- 4Familiarity with LabVIEW RTDS LTspice is highly preferred
- 5Exposure to oscilloscopes power analyzers DAQs microcontrollers PLCs and programmable power supplies or load banks
- 6Deep understanding of Power System Transients Control Theory and Power Electronics
- 7Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for post-processing simulation and test data
- 8Familiarity with IEEE 1547 NERC PRC/MOD FERC requirements or relevant IEC UL standards
- 9B.S. M.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering focusing on Power Systems Power Electronics or Controls
- 10Open to experienced professionals 3+ years preferred and recent graduates with significant project work or thesis
- 11Strong mathematical aptitude in differential equations phasor analysis and system dynamics
- 12Experience designing and executing laboratory tests for electrical systems and interpreting measured data
- 13Ability to debug complex multidisciplinary systems and communicate findings clearly
