Marine Painter, Naval Shipyard & NAVSEA Compliance
Overview
Marine Painter role focusing on corrosion mitigation and ship repair for NAVSEA projects in San Diego on first shift. You will perform shipboard preservation work including painting, sanding, surface prep, coating application, and cleanup aboard active Navy vessels while coordinating with senior technicians. The position supports fleet readiness through large scale modernization and repair activities in Navy environments. Team structure includes shop floor technicians, supervisors, and NAVSEA compliance leads, with a focus on safety and high tempo project delivery.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build and perform painting, touch ups, and preservation on shipboard structures including interior and exterior surfaces
- 2Carry out sanding, grinding, chipping, masking, and cleaning to properly prepare surfaces for coatings
- 3Apply coatings, primers, and preservation materials inside tanks, bilges, voids, and other compartments according to marine coating processes
- 4Assist technicians with coating application, material handling, and setup of painting and preservation equipment
- 5Work aboard ships, piers, dry docks, and industrial marine facilities while adhering to NAVSEA safety standards
- 6Follow confined space entry procedures and tank preservation practices when working in enclosed spaces
- 7Operate basic pneumatic and electric tools used for industrial painting and coating removal as needed
- 8Support blasting or ultra high pressure water jetting activities for corrosion control and surface prep
- 9Maintain cleanliness of work areas and proper storage of materials
- 10Read and follow work instructions to complete assignments on time in a high tempo project driven environment
Requirements10
- 1High school diploma or GED preferred
- 22+ years shipboard painting or marine/industrial paint experience preferred
- 3Proficiency in paint preparation, application, spray gun use in marine environments
- 4Ability to perform preservation tasks including coating, sanding, masking, cleanup on Navy vessels
- 5Experience with marine coatings including temperatures, cure times, mixing requirements
- 6Ability to work safely in confined spaces and heights in shipboard environments
- 7Experience with ultra high pressure water jetting for corrosion control and surface prep
- 8Comfort working in active industrial areas such as piers and dry docks
- 9Physical ability to lift 50+ pounds, stand for extended periods, operate pneumatic/electric tools
- 10OSHA-10 or OSHA-Shipyard certification if available
