Lifeguard, Year-Round & Pool Safety
Overview
You will own the safety of every swimmer across YMCA of Greater Brandywine aquatic facilities, maintaining constant surveillance and enforcing policies under Ellis & Associates standards. You will join a nine-branch association recognized as a 2026 Top Workplace by The Philadelphia Inquirer, working alongside a trained aquatics team. What You'll Do8
- 1Scan your assigned zone every 10 seconds, reaching the farthest point within 20 seconds, and perform a bottom scan during rotations.
- 2Position yourself to eliminate glare and obstructions, guarding from the elevated chair or within one foot of the pool edge.
- 3Change body position every 5 minutes per Jeff Ellis & Associates '5 Minute Strategy'.
- 4Stay 'Rescue Ready' with fanny pack, rescue tube, and whistle, never leaving the deck unguarded.
- 5Participate in all in-house drills, treating each as a live rescue, and close the pool for unsafe conditions.
- 6Enforce pool rules consistently, administer swim tests for children 14 and under, and assist with facility cleanliness.
- 7Rotate zones every 30 minutes, take a 15-minute break after 4 hours, and remain free of cell phone use while guarding.
- 8Follow Thunder and Lightning Policy and all association procedures, reporting hazards immediately.
Requirements6
- 115+ years of age or older.
- 2Current Ellis & Associates lifeguard certification or transferable certification.
- 3Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Oxygen Administration, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications.
- 4Complete monthly Ellis & Associates in-service training and scanning skills.
- 5Obtain additional new hire certifications within 90 days of hire.
- 6Physical ability to sit, reach, move around, and lift up to 10 pounds.
