Health Physicist III, Radiation Safety & MARSSIM Surveys
Overview
Own radiation safety services for a major NIH research campus, managing programs that protect thousands of researchers and patients. You will lead MARSSIM-style decommissioning surveys, field calibrations, and compliance inspections across the institute. Collaborate with NIH safety officers, lab managers, and federal stakeholders. This role leverages 15+ years of radiation safety experience to shape a federally funded environment, with preference for CHP certification.
What You'll Do8
- 1Manage radiation safety services for NIH facilities, ensuring compliance with federal and institutional regulations.
- 2Perform radiation surveys and inspections to identify safety and health hazards, then document findings in detailed written reports.
- 3Lead field calibrations and inspections of survey meters used for radiological contamination monitoring.
- 4Calibrate instruments that measure exposure or dose equivalent rates, ensuring accuracy across all monitoring equipment.
- 5Conduct security checks on radioactive materials and verify inventory integrity.
- 6Design and execute MARSSIM-style final status decommissioning surveys for laboratories and therapy rooms.
- 7Prepare and decontaminate patient therapy rooms to safe release criteria after medical procedures.
- 8Enter survey and calibration data into approved government databases, maintaining accurate records.
Requirements11
- 1Master’s degree in a scientific discipline from an accredited institution.
- 215+ years managing radiation safety services and project management.
- 3Proficiency in performing radiation surveys and inspections to assess compliance and identify hazards.
- 4Skilled in preparing written survey reports that document findings and corrective actions.
- 5Experience conducting security checks on radioactive materials.
- 6Hands-on capability in decontaminating patient therapy rooms.
- 7Proficiency in conducting field calibrations and inspections of survey meters for radiological contamination.
- 8Experience calibrating instruments for exposure or dose equivalent rate measurement.
- 9Ability to enter data accurately into government databases.
- 10Demonstrated skill in designing and performing MARSSIM final status surveys.
- 11CHP certification preferred, or equivalent certification, or experience serving as Radiation Safety Officer or Associate Radiation Safety Officer (years of experience can substitute).
