Firmware HIL Engineer, Test Automation & Embedded Systems
Overview
You will own the HIL test infrastructure for Applied Intuition's hardware-in-the-loop labs, scaling from O(100s) of test benches to O(1000s) of daily jobs. You'll build Python and Bash automation that drives real physical hardware, bridging embedded firmware and PC-side applications. Collaborating with autonomy, tools, and infrastructure teams, you'll deliver reliable CI for physical intelligence systems. This role offers direct ownership of test frameworks, hardware labs, and CI/CD pipelines in a $15B company trusted by top automakers and the military.
What You'll Do9
- 1Build Python and Bash tooling, CLI apps with cmd2, and pytest test infrastructure that interact with physical hardware.
- 2Scale the hardware test lab to O(100s) of test benches and O(1000s) of daily jobs, managing infrastructure and job scheduling.
- 3Debug and fix flaky integration tests in production CI using logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
- 4Design and wire basic circuits for embedded targets, from bring-up to full system validation.
- 5Implement on-target software for firmware/embedded systems, ensuring seamless communication with PC-side applications.
- 6Integrate JTAG debuggers like JLINK and Lauterbach into daily workflows for target bring-up and analysis.
- 7Optimize Linux systems administration, including udev, kernel modules, and systemd, on bare-metal machines.
- 8Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Buildkite or Jenkins, with self-hosted runners on physical hardware.
- 9Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define HIL test strategies and ensure hardware-software integration.
Requirements10
- 14+ years of experience as a software engineer, with at least 2 years in system architecture and implementation.
- 2BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- 3Proficiency in Python and Bash for tooling, test automation, and hardware driver libraries.
- 4Experience building test frameworks that interact with real physical hardware.
- 5Comfort with hardware debugging using logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and basic circuit wiring.
- 6Understanding of modern CI and HIL concepts, including infrastructure scaling.
- 7Linux systems administration skills, including networking, udev, kernel modules, and systemd, preferably on bare-metal.
- 8Familiarity with CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, FlexRay bus tooling and SocketCAN (preferred).
- 9Experience with CI/CD pipeline design using Buildkite or Jenkins and self-hosted runners (preferred).
- 10Knowledge of Bazel and monorepo workflows in large codebases (preferred)
