Field/Base Communications Network Engineer, Navy SMIT
Overview
You will own network operations for the Navy's largest IT services program, SMIT, ensuring reliable BAN/LAN/WAN connectivity across the shore-based enterprise. You will manage a virtual team, drive incident response, and uphold COMSEC standards. Working on the NGEN-R contract, you'll integrate cutting-edge network architectures while maintaining legacy systems. This role offers direct impact on mission-critical communications and a path to advanced certifications.
What You'll Do9
- 1Build and maintain BAN/LAN/WAN network infrastructure, including configuration, installation, and cabling for NGEN-R architectures.
- 2Manage COMSEC assets: load keys, troubleshoot encryption devices, and coordinate with KOAMs to ensure secure communications.
- 3Diagnose and resolve complex routing and switching issues across Cisco and other vendor equipment.
- 4Coordinate planned maintenance windows with stakeholders, minimizing mission impact.
- 5Document network changes and maintain accurate as-is and to-be diagrams.
- 6Implement STIG security controls to meet DoD 8570 requirements and mitigate vulnerabilities.
- 7Drive incident restoral with the NOC, providing clear status updates and applying corrective actions.
- 8Validate network health through proactive monitoring and recommend preventive measures.
- 9Mentor junior engineers on TACACS+ and SNMP monitoring tools.
Requirements9
- 1BA/BS and 4+ years network engineering experience, or MS/MBA with 2+ years (experience may substitute for degree).
- 2DoD Secret clearance with ability to upgrade to TS.
- 3IAT Level II certification (Security+ CE, SSCP, GSEC, or CYSA+).
- 4Cisco CCNA or higher (or vendor equivalent).
- 55+ years troubleshooting complex routing and switching in enterprise environments.
- 65+ years configuring Cisco switches, routers, and WAN acceleration devices.
- 7Experience with defense-in-depth principles and network security architecture.
- 8Physical fitness: lift 50 lbs, work in confined spaces, and stand for 8 hours.
- 9Willingness to travel 25% and support on-call rotations.
