Embedded Software Engineer, Marine Propulsion Controls
Overview
You will own embedded software development for marine propulsion control systems, taking products from concept to production. You'll design and implement C/C++ firmware on microcontrollers, integrating with sensors, CAN networks, and displays. Working with electrical and mechanical engineers, you'll drive system integration, board bring-up, and validation. This role offers direct technical ownership in a small team, with opportunities for sea trials and cross-industry collaboration. No marine experience needed; strong embedded fundamentals from any sector transfer.
What You'll Do9
- 1Design, develop, and maintain embedded software in C/C++ for STM32, TI, or NXP microcontrollers, delivering marine propulsion control features within the first 90 days.
- 2Implement device drivers and hardware abstraction layers (HAL) to interface with sensors, displays, and electro-mechanical actuators over CAN, SPI, I2C, and UART.
- 3Ship robust software by writing unit tests, integrating with Jenkins or GitHub Actions for CI/CD, and tracking code coverage for all new modules.
- 4Own system integration from board bring-up to sea trials, debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and JTAG/SWD debuggers.
- 5Develop and maintain Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test setups and automated test equipment, verifying software against simulated vessel conditions.
- 6Collaborate with mechanical and electrical teams on schematic reviews and PCB layout, recommending components for signal integrity and EMC compliance.
- 7Automate release processes with Git and build scripts, ensuring reproducible firmware builds and reliable field updates.
- 8Support manufacturing by designing test fixtures and diagnostic procedures, reducing production test time for new control units.
- 9Document requirements, design specs, and test reports using Markdown or similar, ensuring clear knowledge transfer for future maintenance.
Requirements10
- 13+ years developing embedded systems in C/C++ for real-time, microcontroller-based products.
- 2B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field; M.S. preferred.
- 3Strong proficiency with communication protocols: CAN, J1939, NMEA 2000, Ethernet, RS-232, RS-485, SPI, I2C, and UART.
- 4Hands-on debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, and JTAG/SWD probes.
- 5Experience building automated test systems or engineering tools with Python, C#, or similar languages.
- 6Familiarity with Git, Jenkins, or GitHub Actions for continuous integration and automated builds.
- 7Proven ability to write unit tests, perform code reviews, and use coverage analysis tools.
- 8Experience with FreeRTOS or similar real-time operating systems in resource-constrained environments.
- 9Exposure to MISRA-C or other coding standards for safety-critical software is a plus.
- 10Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and documentation skills, with ability to work independently and in teams.
