Discipline Operations Manager, Engineering Consulting
Overview
You will lead a discipline sub-group, owning people, processes, and performance at a 100% employee-owned engineering design firm. You will drive staffing, schedules, technical quality, and KPIs to deliver Total Project Success across projects. Partner with other Discipline Operations Managers and the Discipline Operations Director to allocate resources. Guide, direct, and mentor your team, fostering a culture of growth and accountability. What You'll Do12
- 1Allocate weekly hours and staff across projects with other Discipline Operations Managers and the Discipline Operations Director.
- 2Guide, direct, and mentor sub-group members, cultivating growth, accountability, and collaboration.
- 3Set performance expectations, provide feedback, conduct evaluations, and address performance gaps.
- 4Collaborate with Project Managers to ensure adequate staffing and skill mix; support recruiting, onboarding, and annual performance cycles.
- 5Ensure design services meet professional standards, client requirements, and corporate objectives; oversee sub-group QA/QC execution.
- 6Evaluate and resolve atypical or complex design issues, providing expert guidance to teams and clients.
- 7Implement process improvements and discipline standards with the Technical Discipline Leader; publish procedures.
- 8Foster engagement and inter-discipline coordination; resolve conflicts and improve processes to prevent recurrence.
- 9Develop and execute employee development plans; facilitate mentorship pairings and internal training.
- 10Manage sub-group KPIs (utilization, chargeable goals, timesheets, overtime, turnover, engagement) and report progress.
- 11Review and approve timesheets and expense reports; support annual budgeting and provide data-driven input to leadership.
- 12Maintain in-office presence and visit offices with direct reports periodically to build connections.
Requirements10
- 110+ years practical experience in a technical discipline practiced by the firm.
- 25+ years experience in a consulting engineering firm.
- 3Active and up-to-date NCEES council record, if applicable.
- 4Proficiency in the discipline of expertise.
- 5Experience managing projects of small to mid-scale scope and complexity.
- 6Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers.
- 7General knowledge of Revit and discipline software.
- 8Knowledge of contracts, project management, resource allocation, and financial/KPI fundamentals.
- 9Clear written communication, technical writing, effective presentations, and strong speech clarity.
- 10Team building, mentoring, delegation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
