Dental Assistant, Chairside & Sedation Dentistry
Overview
You will own chairside support for a high-volume family and sedation dentistry practice in Chicago, assisting with procedures from routine cleanings to complex sedation cases. You will work alongside one dentist and a small team, managing operatory setup, radiographs, and patient flow across five clinical days. This role demands precision with X-ray certification and CPR/BLS compliance, plus a steady hand in fast-moving mornings and evenings. What You'll Do8
- 1Assist the dentist chairside during restorative, surgical, and sedation procedures, passing instruments and anticipating needs.
- 2Prepare and sterilize instruments and operatories per infection control protocols, using autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners.
- 3Capture digital radiographs and intraoral images with Dexis or similar software, ensuring diagnostic quality on first take.
- 4Record and update patient medical histories and clinical notes in Dentrix or your practice management system.
- 5Ensure patient comfort before, during, and after procedures, explaining steps and answering questions in plain language.
- 6Educate patients on oral hygiene, treatment plans, and post-operative care, reinforcing the dentist's instructions.
- 7Maintain operatory cleanliness and organization, restocking supplies and tracking inventory to avoid mid-day shortages.
- 8Support front office duties as needed, including scheduling appointments and managing patient communications via phone and text.
Requirements8
- 12+ years of dental assisting experience in a clinical setting, with proficiency in chairside procedures and four-handed dentistry.
- 2X-ray certification (RDA or state-issued) required, with ability to perform full-mouth series and panoramic radiographs.
- 3CPR/BLS certification current and maintained, with proof of completion within the last 2 years.
- 4EFDA certification preferred, with experience placing temporary restorations or applying sealants.
- 5Strong clinical knowledge of dental materials, instruments, and sterilization standards, including OSHA and CDC guidelines.
- 6Excellent communication skills, with ability to explain procedures to anxious patients and collaborate with the dental team.
- 7Ability to multitask and manage multiple patients per hour while maintaining accuracy in records and radiographs.
- 8Positive attitude and team-oriented mindset, comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with early morning shifts.
