Writer, Internal Communications & Executive Messaging
Overview
You will write and produce the NYC Health Commissioner's weekly internal newsletter, reaching 7,000+ DOHMH employees. Reporting to the Executive Communications Manager, you will craft human-interest stories that keep staff informed and aligned with agency goals. You will manage the full editorial workflow, from sourcing stories to final publication, on a tight weekly deadline. This role also supports speechwriting and social copy for the Commissioner. You will work in a hybrid schedule and contribute to a mission-driven public health agency.
What You'll Do10
- 1Lead the writing and production of the Commissioner's weekly internal newsletter, from story selection to final design.
- 2Conduct interviews with staff across all departments to source compelling human-interest stories.
- 3Plan and execute internal content that elevates the Commissioner's thought leadership and agency goals.
- 4Ensure all content meets accessibility, inclusivity, and plain language standards.
- 5Translate staff stories into social media copy and support video scripts and remarks.
- 6Develop and maintain the executive communications calendar, coordinating with design and subject matter experts.
- 7Manage urgent deadlines and multiple priorities while maintaining a credible and consistent tone.
- 8Build and maintain an internal communications archive and story bank of approved content.
- 9Provide research and drafting support for speeches and other executive communications as needed.
- 10Assist with broader executive communications strategy and special projects.
Requirements10
- 13+ years in editorial planning, ghost writing, or internal communications.
- 2Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or equivalent professional experience.
- 3Excellent written and verbal communication, translating complex information into clear messaging.
- 4Proven ability to interview and elicit stories from diverse subjects.
- 5Experience with newsletter production workflows and editorial approval processes.
- 6Strong project management skills, handling multiple deadlines.
- 7Familiarity with internal communications metrics and engagement strategies.
- 8Comfort with cross-functional collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- 9Interest in speechwriting and supporting executive communications.
- 10Familiarity with New York City government or public health is desirable.
