Unit Coordinator L&D, Labor and Delivery Support
Overview
Own the front desk and clerical operations for the Labor and Delivery unit at Boston Medical Center, coordinating patient flow and communication for a 24/7 clinical environment. You'll work alongside nurses, physicians, and support staff to ensure families receive timely, courteous service from admission through discharge. What You'll Do10
- 1Greet patients, families, and visitors with a courteous, professional demeanor, directing them to appropriate staff and services.
- 2Answer and route phone calls, check BMC email and voice messages, and log into the PFT extension at shift start and after breaks.
- 3Maintain accurate patient records: prepare charts, label with precaution labels, file results, and ensure documents have correct barcodes before forwarding.
- 4Transcribe patient care orders and schedule appointments using IDX and other scheduling systems, coordinating pre-test and procedure prep.
- 5Update communication boards: room name tags, daily assignment sheets, and patient boards with physician coverage and RN contact numbers.
- 6Initiate RN phone assignments and triage calls through the patient call system, following up to ensure nursing staff responds.
- 7Monitor Bed Board for discharge orders, print and file summaries, and make clinic follow-up appointments before patient discharge.
- 8Secure patient belongings, maintain the belongings list, and arrange transport for patients and materials like medical records and specimens.
- 9Order and restock office supplies using Lawson, RSS, and Staples, verifying receipts and maintaining par levels.
- 10Troubleshoot basic office equipment, reboot computers daily, and report issues to the IT help desk or ITS rounder.
Requirements9
- 1High school diploma or GED required.
- 21-2 years of clerical experience, preferably in a healthcare setting.
- 3Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and hospital systems like SEM, IDX, and SDK.
- 4Ability to interpret and use medical terminology and abbreviations accurately.
- 5Strong interpersonal skills to interact with nursing staff, patients, families, and physicians in a busy environment.
- 6Organizational skills to set priorities and complete assignments accurately.
- 7Basic administrative skills: typing, filing, telephone etiquette.
- 8Physical ability to meet job demands for the patient populations served.
- 9Multilingual skills preferred, especially in languages common to Boston Medical Center patients.
