Test Engineer, Direct-to-Chip Hardware Validation
Overview
You will own the day-to-day operation of Orbital's next-generation Direct-to-Chip test rigs, running tests, troubleshooting, and turning raw output into actionable data. Starting with the tray-level rig, you'll drive component selection, build, and commissioning, then scale to a rack-scale validation unit. You'll work in tightly integrated, vertically integrated teams with mechanical, electrical, and AI engineers. This role combines hands-on rig operation with data review and hardware development, making it ideal for a practical troubleshooter who thrives on physical technology.
What You'll Do9
- 1Operate tray and rack-level test rigs, executing test campaigns against engineering requirements
- 2Troubleshoot rig faults and drive them to resolution on the rig, not from a desk
- 3Review test data for quality and validity, flagging anomalies early
- 4Feed clean, structured data into analysis pipelines for downstream engineering use
- 5Contribute to rig design by sizing, identifying, and procuring key components, managing suppliers and lead times
- 6Build and commission rigs, including leak checks and function testing
- 7Install and wire thermocouples, sensors, and signal instrumentation
- 8Support mechanical and electrical builds, including control panels, under guidance
- 9Verify sensor calibration and signal integrity before each test
Requirements6
- 12+ years operating test rigs or lab hardware in thermal, fluids, or electronics cooling contexts
- 2Comfortable with data analysis, able to spot bad readings and structure output
- 3Hands-on experience with low-voltage wiring, thermocouples, and sensor signals
- 4Proven ability to troubleshoot practical problems on physical systems
- 5Experience sizing and specifying components, managing procurement through delivery
- 6Bonus: hands-on capability with 3D printers, CNC, or workshop tooling
