Sybase DBA, ASE & Aurora PostgreSQL Migration
Overview
You will own the Sybase ASE estate end-to-end, from performance optimization to patching and lifecycle management. You will drive the sunsetting of legacy platforms and migrate workloads to Aurora PostgreSQL, partnering with engineering teams in a transformation program. This contract role demands 5 days onsite in McLean, Plano, or Atlanta, and you will build automation for repeatable engineering tasks that reduce manual toil. You will work directly with DB engineers and architects to shape the migration strategy, making your mark on a modernization initiative.
What You'll Do8
- 1Own Sybase ASE performance tuning, including query analysis, index strategy, and configuration adjustments to meet SLAs.
- 2Manage patching cycles and version upgrades across Sybase ASE environments, ensuring stability and security compliance.
- 3Lead the migration of workloads from Sybase to Aurora PostgreSQL, including schema conversion, data validation, and cutover planning.
- 4Collaborate with application teams to sunset legacy Sybase instances, retiring hardware and decommissioning databases safely.
- 5Write scripts and automation using Shell and Python to streamline repeatable DBA tasks like monitoring and backup validation.
- 6Design and implement high availability and disaster recovery solutions for Sybase ASE and Aurora PostgreSQL.
- 7Document runbooks and architectural decisions, sharing knowledge with onshore and offshore team members.
- 8Monitor database health, capacity, and performance trends, providing proactive recommendations to prevent outages.
Requirements8
- 15+ years administering Sybase ASE in production environments, including configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- 2Proven experience with Aurora PostgreSQL or PostgreSQL, including migration strategies and compatibility assessment.
- 3Hands-on expertise in performance optimization: query tuning, index design, and execution plan analysis for Sybase ASE.
- 4Experience with database patching and version upgrades, managing change windows and rollback plans.
- 5Strong scripting skills in Shell and Python for task automation and tooling.
- 6Familiarity with high availability architectures like Replication Server and Cluster Edition.
- 7Working knowledge of Linux operating system administration and command-line utilities.
- 8Ability to work onsite 5 days per week in McLean, Plano, or Atlanta.
