Sybase DB Engineer - Performance & Migration
Overview
You will own the lifecycle of Sybase ASE databases across enterprise platforms, including patching, performance tuning, and modernization. You will drive the migration of legacy Sybase systems to Aurora PostgreSQL or equivalent strategic targets. This role sits on a dedicated infrastructure team in a hybrid onsite setup with 5 days onsite mandatory, collaborating across engineering and operations. You will also automate repeatable DBA tasks to cut operational overhead, positioning you at the forefront of database transformation.
What You'll Do8
- 1Manage Sybase ASE instances, overseeing patching, upgrades, and lifecycle management.
- 2Tune database performance by analyzing query plans, indexes, and system parameters.
- 3Design and execute migration paths from Sybase to Aurora PostgreSQL or equivalent platforms.
- 4Automate routine DBA tasks using scripting tools like Shell or Python to reduce manual effort.
- 5Support the sunsetting of legacy Sybase platforms, ensuring data integrity and zero downtime.
- 6Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align database architecture with strategic goals.
- 7Implement monitoring and alerting for database health, capacity, and performance metrics.
- 8Document migration procedures and operational runbooks for future reference.
Requirements8
- 15+ years administering Sybase ASE in production environments.
- 2Strong expertise in Sybase performance optimization, including query tuning and index strategies.
- 3Hands-on experience patching Sybase databases and managing lifecycle from version upgrades to decommissioning.
- 4Proven track record migrating Sybase databases to Aurora PostgreSQL or similar cloud-native databases.
- 5Skilled in automation using Shell, Python, or Ansible for repeatable tasks.
- 6Ability to work 5 days onsite at any of these locations: McLean, VA; Plano, TX; or Atlanta, GA.
- 7Solid understanding of database security, backup, and recovery procedures.
- 8Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
