Survey Technician, Field Surveying & Data Capture in Detroit Area
Overview
Survey Technician leads field data collection and staking for residential to public infrastructure projects in Southeast Michigan. You will partner with a Crew Chief to perform boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction staking surveys at scale, ensuring precise measurements and reliable results. The role supports a multi discipline field team across multiple sites with onsite, safety focused work. This role offers hands on experience with GPS, total stations, and data collectors in real world environments.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build field data collection workflows using GPS equipment, total stations, and data collectors to support diverse survey projects
- 2Support boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction staking surveys for multiple sites including residential, commercial, and public projects
- 3Record accurate field notes and maintain detailed documentation of survey measurements and observations
- 4Prepare, set up, operate, and maintain survey equipment including GPS units, total stations, and data collectors
- 5Collaborate with Crew Chiefs and project teams to plan and complete survey assignments safely, efficiently, and on schedule
- 6Perform outdoor field work in varying terrain and weather conditions while adhering to safety procedures
- 7Assist with construction staking and layout activities to guide construction crews and verify project alignment
- 8Collect precise field data and measurements needed for drafting, mapping, and engineering design
- 9Collaborate with senior staff to contribute to a positive and productive field crew environment
- 10Lifting and transporting survey equipment as needed and maintaining organization of field notes and drawings
Requirements10
- 11+ years of land surveying experience preferred or entry level with related education or internship
- 2Experience using GPS equipment, total stations, and data collectors in a field environment preferred
- 3Familiarity with construction staking practices and fundamental land surveying principles
- 4Ability to work as part of a field crew and coordinate with Crew Chiefs and project teams
- 5Strong communication skills to coordinate field activities and report findings clearly
- 6Willingness to learn, take direction from senior staff, and develop technical surveying skills
- 7Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- 8Ability to lift survey equipment and perform physically demanding outdoor work
- 9Comfort working outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions
- 10AutoCAD experience and familiarity with Civil 3D is beneficial for integrating field data
