Substitute Security Officer, K-12 School Safety
Overview
You own safety and order for 1,000+ students across Camden City schools, reporting to the Principal and Chief Security Officer. You patrol corridors, lunchrooms, grounds, and events, intervening in incidents and coordinating with public safety. This role demands constant motion, sharp observation, and quick response. You bring law-enforcement-level judgment without the badge, building trust with students and staff. Every shift changes, so you stay ready for anything.
What You'll Do10
- 1Patrol corridors, lunchrooms, restrooms, and grounds to enforce school rules and prevent incidents.
- 2Respond to crisis signals and emergency calls within minutes, de-escalating conflicts and protecting students.
- 3Monitor building perimeters and entry points, checking IDs and questioning visitors.
- 4Document all incidents in written reports, filing major incident reports within 24 hours.
- 5Coordinate with Camden police and fire departments during lockdowns, evacuations, or medical emergencies.
- 6Supervise lunch periods and afterschool events, directing crowd flow and enforcing noise limits.
- 7Check restrooms every 30 minutes for vandalism, smoking, or unauthorized activity.
- 8Escort students and staff to buses, parking lots, and off-campus activities as directed.
- 9Enforce the no-sitting, no-socializing rule during patrols, staying on your feet.
- 10Serve as a special officer of Camden during assigned hours, with legal authority to detain.
Requirements7
- 1High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 2Criminal history background check and physical exam cleared.
- 3U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
- 4NJ residency required under New Jersey First Act.
- 5Ability to stand and walk for full shifts, lift 50 lbs, and use two-way radios.
- 63+ months in security, law enforcement, or military service (preferred).
- 7CPR/First Aid certification (preferred).
