Overview

The role owns strategic communications for planning transportation and infrastructure projects across multiple regions, guiding messaging, stakeholder engagement, and crisis response at scale. You will lead a cross functional team of communicators and work with senior consultants and client partners to advance communications strategies that build trust and center community voices. The position also contributes to DWA's brand, thought leadership, and external communications. This is a hybrid, client facing role requiring 10-15% travel.

What You'll Do12

  • 1Build and execute comprehensive communications strategies for planning transportation and infrastructure projects with community impact
  • 2Draft, edit, and produce press releases fact sheets talking points project updates and stakeholder correspondence
  • 3Manage crisis strategies and rapid response communications across channels
  • 4Coordinate media relations including press inquiries spokesperson preparation and coverage monitoring
  • 5Develop stakeholder outreach communications and coordinate with public information officers and client agencies
  • 6Prepare invitations agendas presentations and post event summaries for engagement activities
  • 7Track stakeholder concerns questions and commitments and develop follow up communications
  • 8Cultivate relationships with community based organizations and media as appropriate
  • 9Create digital content for websites social media newsletters and public portals
  • 10Oversee subconsultant resources and deliverables ensuring accessibility and plain language materials
  • 11Support agency external communications including website social channels and thought leadership
  • 12Prepare proposals presentations and marketing collateral to communicate DWA's expertise

Requirements10

  • 1Bachelor's degree in communications public relations public affairs journalism urban planning or related field
  • 2Minimum of five (5) years of experience in strategic communications public affairs or community engagement with at least two (2) years supporting public sector infrastructure or transportation projects
  • 3Strong writing ability for diverse audiences including residents elected officials and media
  • 4Experience planning and supporting public engagement events and stakeholder outreach campaigns
  • 5Proficiency with Microsoft 365 and digital communications platforms
  • 6Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural competency across varied communities
  • 7Strong project management skills managing multiple priorities under deadline
  • 8Knowledge of Charlotte Mecklenburg communities regional stakeholders and local government landscape
  • 9Experience with public sector entities government structures and management consulting or public affairs firms
  • 10Preferred familiarity with large scale P3 enterprise initiatives and community engagement best practices
