Standards Researcher, AI Security & NIST
Overview
You will research open questions behind individual Security Level 5 controls, draft control text and overlay content, and maintain the standard as it revises. You will support the Standards Lead in stakeholder engagement with frontier AI labs and US intelligence agencies, writing up decisions from those conversations. This role sits on a small team tripling headcount this year, building the first datacenter purpose-built to Security Level 5. The work has direct impact on defending frontier models from nation-state attackers, and you will shape the reference tech stack that guides labs' buildouts.
What You'll Do8
- 1Research open questions behind individual Security Level 5 controls, assessing what the control should require and whether existing literature and industry practice solve it.
- 2Draft control text and overlay content for the SL5 standard, iterating with the Standards Lead and incorporating feedback from stakeholders.
- 3Maintain the standard as it revises, tracking changes and ensuring consistency across sections.
- 4Support the Standards Lead in stakeholder engagement, writing up conclusions from discussions with CISOs, AI labs, and US intelligence officials.
- 5Synthesize primary sources including NIST publications, ICD 705, and vendor documentation into clear, actionable control requirements.
- 6Document open questions and flag unresolved items, leaving them for resolution rather than forcing premature closure.
- 7Collaborate with engineers and security architects to validate control feasibility against frontier AI workloads.
- 8Deliver a first draft of a control section within the first 90 days, incorporating feedback from internal reviewers.
Requirements6
- 13+ years in security research or standards work, with ability to read and synthesize primary sources like NIST and ICD 705.
- 2Proven ability to write clearly and precisely under editorial pressure, with examples of published standards, whitepapers, or technical documentation.
- 3Comfortable leaving questions open and flagged rather than resolving prematurely, with strong documentation habits.
- 4Experience engaging with stakeholders in security or intelligence communities, as shown by prior project involvement.
- 5Preferred: Background in AI security, cloud architecture, or datacenter design, with knowledge of SL5 or related security frameworks.
- 6Preferred: Familiarity with vendor documentation for GPU clusters, network security, or hardware security modules.
