Staff Software Engineer, Communications Platform
Overview
You will own the architecture of Headway's communications platform, powering outreach to 75,000+ providers and 1 million+ patients across all 50 states. You will design and evolve the agentic decision engine, experimentation layer, and channel orchestration that define how we reach every patient and provider at the right moment. You will work with marketing, CX, product, and the patient org, setting technical direction for a multi-vendor stack including Knock, Iterable, Twilio, and Mailgun. You will bring LLM-powered personalization from concept to production. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of mental healthcare access at scale.
What You'll Do8
- 1Design the architecture for a high-throughput, event-driven communications platform handling millions of events per month across email, SMS, and push.
- 2Build the agentic decision engine that learns the best message, channel, and timing for each individual, improving with every send.
- 3Own the unified message ledger that tracks every communication across all channels, ensuring reliability and consistency.
- 4Drive the experimentation layer, enabling A/B testing and personalization at scale with Python and FastAPI.
- 5Lead the integration of LLM-powered features, focusing on reliability, latency, and quality in production.
- 6Set technical direction for the multi-vendor delivery stack, making build-vs-buy trade-offs at the platform layer.
- 7Collaborate with marketing, CX, and product teams to translate technical trade-offs into business impact.
- 8Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the team, leaving teams more capable than you found them.
Requirements7
- 18+ years of software engineering experience, with meaningful time at Staff-level or equivalent.
- 2Designed and built high-volume, event-driven communications platforms (email, SMS, push) at millions of events per month.
- 3Fluency with multi-vendor delivery stacks and strong opinions about build-vs-buy trade-offs at the platform layer.
- 4Experience building or working closely with experimentation infrastructure: A/B testing, engagement analytics, personalization, or recommendation systems.
- 5Exposure to LLM-powered systems in production, including reliability, latency, and quality at scale.
- 6Demonstrated ability to shape technical direction across teams without direct authority.
- 7Experience with Python, TypeScript, React, Postgres, Redis, AWS, Kafka, and Spark is preferred.
