You will fabricate, assemble, and repair metal structures aboard vessels and in shipyard facilities. Shipfitting defines your daily work: laying out, cutting, fitting, and tack-welding steel for bulkheads, decks, and frames. You will operate cutting torches, grinders, and saws in a rigorous industrial setting. Your team works on complex marine projects, including submarines, under strict safety protocols. This role demands precision, physical endurance, and a commitment to craftsmanship.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and ship specifications to plan structural work.
  • 2Lay out, cut, fit, and tack-weld steel plates, frames, and structural components for ship construction and repair.
  • 3Install bulkheads, decks, foundations, and brackets on vessels and in shipyard facilities.
  • 4Use levels, squares, plumb bobs, and tape measures to verify dimensions and alignment.
  • 5Operate cutting torches, grinders, saws, and other fabrication tools to shape and prepare metal.
  • 6Align and secure parts with wedges, dogs, chain falls, and come-alongs for assembly.
  • 7Prepare materials for welders and assist in structural assembly to support project completion.
  • 8Inspect completed work for quality, alignment, and compliance with specifications.
  • 9Perform mechanical and marine repair tasks on valves, engines, and motors as needed.
  • 10Troubleshoot mechanical systems and follow safety procedures in confined spaces and at heights.

Requirements9

  • 1Shipfitting experience in structural fabrication or industrial construction.
  • 2Ability to read and interpret blueprints, structural drawings, and ship specifications.
  • 3Proficiency in layout, cutting, fitting, and basic welding of steel structures.
  • 4Familiarity with chain falls, come-alongs, and rigging practices.
  • 5Hands-on experience in marine and ship repair environments, including engines and motors.
  • 6Ability to perform valve repair and troubleshooting.
  • 7Strong understanding of hot-work, fall protection, and confined-space safety.
  • 8Physical ability to lift, climb, kneel, and work in tight spaces for extended periods.
  • 9Active Secret Security Clearance required.
