Shelter Advocate Graveyard Shift & Weekends, Domestic Violence Shelter
Overview
The Shelter Advocate will ensure safety and security for survivors and their children in a domestic violence shelter at scale in a graveyard shift with weekends. You will enforce policies, provide crisis support, address basic needs, and resolve conflicts while maintaining site security and controlled access. You will collaborate with a dedicated team to create a safe nurturing environment for healing and growth.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build relationships with survivors and families, maintaining confidentiality and providing information, referrals, crisis intervention, and support with a strength-based approach
- 2Handle front desk duties, greet visitors, route inquiries, and maintain client files and incident logs
- 3Operate safety and security systems, conduct visual inspections, respond to crises, and coordinate with leadership and emergency services
- 4Maintain clean, organized facilities, set up shelter rooms, and manage supplies and donations
- 5Assist in meal preparation and service as needed to sustain shelter operations
- 6Learn and apply Salvation Army policies and procedures, and attend staff meetings
- 7Coordinate with coworkers on security tasks such as fire watches and incident reporting
- 8Document activities accurately and report maintenance needs to appropriate personnel
- 9Demonstrate cultural responsiveness and effective communication with diverse populations
- 10Perform other duties as assigned to support shelter services and program requirements
Requirements10
- 1High school diploma or GED preferred but not required
- 2Yearly certification in first aid, CPR and a Food Handler’s card
- 3Strong customer service and timely task completion abilities
- 4Ability to prioritize multiple requests from survivors and families
- 5Problem-solving skills, patience, and genuine concern for survivors of domestic violence
- 6Commitment to confidentiality and privacy of survivors and families
- 7Basic Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook skills
- 8Ability to engage with diverse populations respectfully and culturally responsively
- 9Strong communication and teamwork with staff and residents from varied backgrounds
- 10Physical ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, lift up to 25 lbs, and operate computer and telephone
