Residential Aide, Shelter Operations & Trauma-Informed Care
Overview
You'll maintain safety and security at a DHS-funded shelter in Queens, monitoring resident activity and responding to incidents with a trauma-informed approach. You'll work alongside a team that integrates transitional housing with mental health services through the Health Realization Approach, reporting to the Facility Manager and Site Director. This role is key to supporting daily operations and ensuring a dignified environment for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. You'll gain hands-on experience in shelter operations within a supportive nonprofit environment.
What You'll Do8
- 1Monitor shelter entrances, common areas, and resident activity to ensure a secure environment.
- 2Conduct regular rounds, maintain sign-in/out logs, visitor logs, and complete bed checks as required.
- 3Respond to incidents, emergencies, and conflicts using de-escalation and trauma-informed methods, then report to supervisory staff.
- 4Complete accurate incident reports, log entries, and shift-change communications to ensure continuity of care.
- 5Assist residents with basic needs, facility orientation, and adherence to community guidelines with respect for client dignity.
- 6Support intake, room assignments, and distribution of supplies as directed.
- 7Enforce health, safety, and fire-safety procedures, and assist with evacuations and drills.
- 8Perform other duties as assigned by the Facility Manager or Site Director to support shelter operations.
Requirements6
- 1High school diploma or equivalent (HSE/GED) required.
- 2Experience in shelter, residential, security, or human-services settings preferred.
- 3Ability to remain calm under pressure and de-escalate conflict effectively.
- 4Strong observational skills, reliability, and attention to detail.
- 5Ability to complete clear written logs and reports.
- 6Ability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.
Salary Insight
