Senior Data Engineer, Healthcare Claims & GCP
Overview
You will own and scale the data platform at Protera Health, a musculoskeletal specialty care company, driving clinical operations, payer reporting, and analytics. Reporting to the President, you will lead a small team as the full technical lead for data, building pipelines, modeling, and infrastructure. You will work cross-functionally with clinical, technology, finance, and compliance teams, handling sensitive PHI and healthcare claims data. This role offers founder-level autonomy and direct access to leadership, shaping core systems that affect real patients and partners. You will champion safe AI principles, using AI tools responsibly while ensuring HIPAA compliance.
What You'll Do8
- 1Build and orchestrate ingestion pipelines via Mage (SFTP, APIs, EHR extracts) and write production-grade Python for transformations and reporting.
- 2Design optimized analytical models in BigQuery and maintain complex SQL assets in BigQuery and PostgreSQL, balancing scale, performance, and cost.
- 3Own and manage GCP infrastructure (Compute Engine, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Functions, Secret Manager, VPC, IAM) entirely via Terraform.
- 4Implement robust data quality checks, freshness and volume monitoring, failure alerts, and incident response paths.
- 5Develop and maintain internal reporting surfaces using Looker Studio, Grafana, and Metabase.
- 6Design pipelines that adhere to PHI requirements, ensuring minimum-necessary access, encryption, least-privilege IAM, and audit logging for SOC 2 Type 2, HIPAA, and HITRUST compliance.
- 7Collaborate with clinical operations, product, finance, and other teams to translate business questions into reliable data products, and contribute to architecture for future AI/ML initiatives.
- 8Lead technical strategy for data platform, including data preparation and feature engineering for advanced analytics.
Requirements9
- 15+ years in data engineering, analytics engineering, or a hybrid backend/data role.
- 2Bachelor’s in Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.
- 3Proven ability to write, test, debug, and ship production code with structured logging and dependency management.
- 4Demonstrated experience working with healthcare claims data and PHI.
- 5Deep expertise in production data pipelines, window functions, CTEs, and query/cost optimization for large tables using Python and SQL.
- 6Hands-on experience with GCP services: BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Cloud SQL, Compute Engine, Functions, Logging/Monitoring, Secret Manager, and IAM.
- 7Production experience with PostgreSQL including schema design, indexing, and diagnosing slow queries.
- 8Experience with modern orchestrators (Mage, Airflow, Dagster, dbt) and BI layers (Looker Studio, Power BI, semantic modeling).
- 9Demonstrated care handling sensitive data in regulated environments and sound judgment regarding use of AI-assisted coding tools.
