Patient Care Technician Orthopedics
Overview
As a Patient Care Technician on our 30-bed orthopedic unit at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, you will own daily patient care for post-operative hip and knee replacements and bariatric surgeries. You will partner with RNs to deliver rehabilitative support, using specialty equipment like continuous passive motion machines and bed trapezes. What You'll Do6
- 1Provide direct patient care including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning) and assistance with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
- 2Perform core nursing assistant duties: blood glucose checks, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, and Foley care.
- 3Execute at least four unit-identified tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressings, Foley catheter removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scans, straight catheter, or IV catheter removal.
- 4Apply and reapply telemetry monitors and support HAC and PSI prevention using TEDs and SCDs.
- 5Report changes in patient status to the RN and provide feedback on patient care.
- 6Achieve all required competencies and attend a 7-day mandatory training course if new to hospital-based PCT work.
Requirements7
- 1High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 2One year of general healthcare experience OR enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program with one clinical rotation OR a bachelor's degree in health sciences.
- 3Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
- 4Act 33, Act 34, and Act 73 FBI Clearance.
- 5Preferred: EMT or Paramedic certification or current enrollment in such a program.
- 6Preferred: completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class.
- 7Advanced skills as needed: phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, Basic Arrhythmia Course completion for telemetry units.
