What You'll Do10

  • 1Prepare the operating room by arranging surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions, verifying all equipment functions correctly.
  • 2Label and hand medications to the surgeon following established protocols, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  • 3Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and assistants during procedures, manage retractors, sutures, and sponges, and assist with specimen handling and dressing application.
  • 4Support the surgical team by applying sterile gowns and gloves, and maintain aseptic technique throughout the operation.
  • 5Prepare patients for surgery by performing skin prep, positioning on the operating table, and applying sterile drapes.
  • 6Transfer patients to and from the operating room, assisting with postoperative cleanup and room restocking.
  • 7Monitor the environment for safety hazards and aseptic compliance, ensuring a clean and safe operating space.
  • 8Document and assist with instrument counts to prevent retained items, following hospital policies.
  • 9Collaborate with the team to support OB Operating Rooms as needed, adapting to varying surgical specialties.
  • 10Clean and restock the operating room after procedures, preparing for the next case efficiently.

Requirements9

  • 1Completion of a formal surgical technologist program from an accredited community college, vocational school, university, hospital, or military program.
  • 20-2 years of experience for Surgical Technologist role; recent graduates welcome.
  • 3Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist Surgery Certified (TSC) within 6 months of program completion (or as per PA House Bill 81 exceptions).
  • 4CPR certification based on AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration, within 30 days of hire.
  • 5Act 34 Criminal Clearance with renewal, plus Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
  • 6Continuing education: 30 hours every 2 years if not certified, or maintain certification through credentialing organization.
  • 7Ability to work in a fast-paced surgical environment with attention to detail and sterile technique.
  • 8Physical stamina to stand for long periods and assist with patient positioning and equipment handling.
