OR Nurse Job - San Francisco VA - Scrub & Circulate
Overview
You will own the perioperative care of every patient undergoing operative and invasive procedures, ensuring safety and sterility from admission to recovery. Working within the VA system, you will function in both circulator and scrub roles across all surgical specialties. You will collaborate directly with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and AORN-standard teams, coordinating care through the Time Out process and specimen management. What You'll Do9
- 1Plan and coordinate care for each surgical patient, respecting individual needs and team input.
- 2Perform circulator and scrub duties across all surgical specialties, maintaining AORN and VHA standards.
- 3Verify and maintain sterile fields, ensuring all instrumentation and equipment functions safely.
- 4Protect patients from chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal injury, and prevent retained items.
- 5Execute counting procedures and participate in Time Out to confirm correct site, side, and level.
- 6Manage patient specimens, administer medications safely, and maintain wound and tissue perfusion.
- 7Document all perioperative care in the electronic health record, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
- 8Follow SOPs for reusable medical equipment, consulting Sterile Processing and Infection Control as needed.
- 9Take on-call duty during off hours for emergency surgical procedures.
Requirements10
- 1Active, unrestricted RN license from any U.S. state or territory.
- 2Graduate of an accredited nursing program: ACEN, CCNE, or recognized foreign equivalency (ICD).
- 3U.S. citizenship required for VA positions.
- 4BLS provider card from AHA or MTN.
- 5ACLS provider card from AHA or MTN.
- 63 years of OR scrub and circulate experience.
- 73 years of cardiovascular OR experience, scrubbing and circulating.
- 8BSN degree preferred.
- 9English language proficiency per 38 U.S.C. 7403(f).
- 10Pass pre-employment physical and background/security investigation.
