Surgical Technician, Operating Room Assistant
Overview
You will own the sterile field and instrument handling for all surgical procedures at a VA hospital in Nashville, ensuring the surgeon operates without delay. This role serves as the primary scrub person, coordinating with the circulating RN and surgical team to maintain a precise, safe environment. What You'll Do10
- 1Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during operating room procedures, delivering instruments and supplies with speed and accuracy.
- 2Handle all specimens appropriately, ensuring proper labeling and preservation for pathology.
- 3Perform sponge and instrument counts with the circulating RN to verify accuracy before, during, and after surgery.
- 4Assist the surgeon by performing specific procedures such as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures.
- 5Train team members on the operation of air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, urologic equipment, and recording devices.
- 6Perform non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions and recognize hazardous situations like frayed cords or wet floors, taking corrective action.
- 7Assess equipment needs and maintain adequate stock of supplies and materials, using proper cleaning techniques for various items.
- 8Serve as the primary scrub person for all surgical procedures, organizing highly complex sterile setups and maintaining the Operating Room (OR) area.
- 9Plan and discuss each procedure with surgical professionals, ensuring all supplies and equipment are available prior to the procedure.
- 10Assist team members with patient care tasks such as positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies.
Requirements10
- 11+ year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-6 in the federal service, including operating room experience setting up sterile fields with air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, laparoscopic equipment, microscopes, lasers, arthroscopy equipment, and urologic equipment.
- 2Proficiency in proper sterilization and cleaning techniques for instruments and equipment.
- 3Ability to assist surgeons with procedures like skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures.
- 4Dexterity in passing instruments without compromising aseptic technique, with little or no effort from the surgeon.
- 5Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, push, reach, and stretch for extended periods, and to lift and position unconscious patients.
- 6U.S. citizenship required.
- 7Successful completion of a drug test and background/security investigation.
- 8Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program, or obtain an exemption.
- 9Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959.
- 10Serve a 1-year probationary period.
