Overview

You will own mechanical design for heavy civil, industrial, and waterfront infrastructure projects, including movable bridges, aircraft hangar doors, and marine terminals. As a mechanical engineer in KPFF's Special Projects Division, you will join a 150+ engineer team across three offices, collaborating with clients like the Ports of Seattle, Tacoma, and Los Angeles. You will work with SolidWorks, FEA, and hydraulic systems on unique, multi-disciplinary challenges from concept through construction. This role offers direct client collaboration, a path to licensure, and the chance to shape projects that define the Pacific Northwest waterfront.

What You'll Do7

  • 1Design mechanical systems for movable bridges, hangar doors, and container terminal infrastructure using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • 2Perform finite element analysis (FEA) on structural components and machine elements under dynamic loads.
  • 3Develop hydraulic power systems and fuel piping layouts for industrial waterfront projects.
  • 4Collaborate with structural, civil, and electrical engineers to integrate mechanical systems into complex project geometries.
  • 5Conduct field observations at ports and shipyards, verifying existing conditions and supporting construction.
  • 6Prepare design calculations, technical specifications, and construction documents for permitting and bid.
  • 7Support project managers with equipment selection, vendor coordination, and cost estimation for mechanical scopes.

Requirements9

  • 13-6 years of mechanical engineering experience, with exposure to heavy machinery design or industrial infrastructure.
  • 2Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 3EIT certification required; PE preferred.
  • 4Proficiency in SolidWorks (parts, assemblies, drawings) and familiarity with AutoCAD or Revit.
  • 5Strong grasp of machine design principles: statics, dynamics, kinematics, fluid mechanics, and strength of materials.
  • 6Experience with force analysis (free-body diagrams, shear/moment diagrams) and stress analysis using FEA.
  • 7Knowledge of weldment design, bearings, pins, and standard machinery components.
  • 8Working knowledge of hydraulic power systems, electric motors, drives, and industrial process piping.
  • 9Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate with diverse project teams.
