Lead Mechanical Design Engineer
Overview
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer owns the design and development of aerospace components and systems for Kronos Consulting in Phoenix, AZ. This role leads a cross-functional team of 10+ engineers, driving projects from concept through production while ensuring compliance with AS9100 and MIL-STD standards. You will direct structural analysis using ANSYS Workbench and ANSYS APDL and perform rotor dynamics and shafting analyses. This position offers direct interaction with major aircraft integrators and the opportunity to mentor junior engineers.
What You'll Do10
- 1Lead mechanical design of aerospace components and systems from concept to production, delivering first article hardware within 6 months.
- 2Develop and review detailed mechanical drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation to ensure AS9100 compliance.
- 3Perform and review structural analysis using ANSYS Workbench and ANSYS APDL, validating designs against stress and deflection requirements.
- 4Apply 1D beam-based FEA techniques to evaluate structural performance and optimize weight and strength.
- 5Conduct rotor dynamics and shafting analyses to ensure mechanical integrity under operational loads.
- 6Facilitate design reviews, risk assessments, and FMEA sessions, driving decisions that mitigate technical risks.
- 7Collaborate with systems engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure design manufacturability and compliance.
- 8Interface with customers and suppliers to clarify requirements, resolve technical issues, and deliver design solutions.
- 9Mentor and guide 3-5 junior engineers, fostering technical growth and design excellence.
- 10Support design improvements, testing, and product development through full lifecycle, driving continuous improvement.
Requirements10
- 18+ years of mechanical design engineering experience in aerospace or a related industry.
- 25+ years using ANSYS Workbench or ANSYS APDL for structural analysis.
- 3Hands-on experience with 1D beam-based FEA for structural evaluation.
- 4Proven experience in rotor dynamics and shafting structural analysis.
- 5Lead experience on mechanical design projects, including design reviews and technical discussions.
- 6Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, structural analysis, and aerospace components.
- 7Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Master's preferred.
- 8Familiarity with AS9100, MIL-STD, or other aerospace standards.
- 9Experience with PLM tools and design for manufacturability, tolerance analysis.
- 10Knowledge of aerospace materials, manufacturing processes, and certification processes.
