Overview

This role leads the development of complex electromechanical systems from concept through production. You will own mechanical design, analysis, and testing for high-reliability, mission-critical mechanisms. The position spans CONOPS, 3D CAD modeling, FEA analysis, and design reviews. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior engineers. This contract-to-hire role is onsite in Silver Spring, MD, with 5+ years of experience required.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Lead mechanical design of electromechanical systems from concept to production, including 3D CAD modeling and detailed design.
  • 2Drive systems through structured design reviews, managing gates and presenting technical content to stakeholders.
  • 3Translate operational concepts into mechanical requirements and participate in CONOPS activities.
  • 4Perform finite element analysis (FEA) using NASTRAN/FEMAP and validate results with hand calculations.
  • 5Manage design data and configuration control using PLM/PDMS systems like Siemens.
  • 6Plan verification and validation activities, including creating requirements verification matrices.
  • 7Develop test plans and manage products through environmental and functional test campaigns.
  • 8Own development schedules and milestone reviews, ensuring deliverables align with timelines.
  • 9Organize technical interchange meetings to coordinate design decisions and resolve issues.
  • 10Mentor engineers and support business development by contributing to proposals.

Requirements10

  • 15+ years of mechanical engineering experience with complex electromechanical systems.
  • 22-3 years of lead technical responsibility over hardware development.
  • 3Proficiency in 3D CAD software (NX preferred) for complete system design.
  • 4Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and hand calculations.
  • 5Experience with PLM/PDMS systems for document and configuration management.
  • 6Knowledge of materials like aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber composites.
  • 7Experience with environmental testing (thermal vacuum, vibration, acoustic) preferred.
  • 8Familiarity with mechanisms like hold-down and release devices, solar arrays, and drive assemblies.
  • 9Strong communication and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.
  • 10Ability to work to tight deadlines and manage project milestones.
