Overview

You will own diagnostic histology procedures on renal tissue specimens, processing samples for immunofluorescence, light, and electron microscopy. You will join the Nephropathology Lab at UNC-Chapel Hill, working alongside residents, fellows, and researchers. This contract role offers 6+ months of full-time work, Monday through Friday, with a focus on quality and safety. You will cross-train across all three microscopy techniques and serve as a technical resource for the lab.

What You'll Do9

  • 1Process and embed renal tissue specimens for immunofluorescence, light, and electron microscopy within the first 90 days.
  • 2Section and stain samples using H&E, PAS, trichrome, and silver methods, ensuring diagnostic quality.
  • 3Perform antigen retrieval methods to optimize staining outcomes for challenging antibodies.
  • 4Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, including microtomes, cryostats, and electron microscopes.
  • 5Conduct quality control testing and document results in compliance with CLIA, OSHA, and UNC-CH regulations.
  • 6Maintain laboratory logs, operating manuals, and supply inventory to support uninterrupted operations.
  • 7Train residents, fellows, graduate students, and new staff on histological procedures and safety protocols.
  • 8Manage laboratory waste appropriately, including hazardous materials, per regulatory standards.
  • 9Participate in quality improvement activities and health and safety oversight for microscopy services.

Requirements9

  • 1Bachelor's degree in medical technology, chemistry, or a biological science (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • 21-2 years of hands-on histology experience in a clinical or research laboratory setting.
  • 3Proficiency in tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining techniques for immunofluorescence, light, and electron microscopy.
  • 4Experience with antigen retrieval methods, including heat-induced epitope retrieval (HIER) and enzymatic retrieval.
  • 5Knowledge of CLIA regulations and safety standards, including OSHA bloodborne pathogen training.
  • 6Ability to operate and troubleshoot microtomes, cryostats, and ultramicrotomes.
  • 7Strong attention to detail and documentation skills for maintaining logs and quality control records.
  • 8Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced diagnostic environment.
  • 9Excellent communication skills to train and support laboratory personnel and researchers.
