Freight Train Conductor, Railroad Operations
Overview
You will own train crew supervision and switch engine coordination for East Penn Railroad in Philadelphia. This role combines hands-on rail yard work with safety compliance under FRA regulations. You will lead crews in coupling, uncoupling, and inspecting railcars across industrial sites. The position demands physical stamina and sharp attention to signals and surroundings. You will receive paid training and advance to Engineer based on seniority.
What You'll Do8
- 1Supervise train crews and coordinate switch engine crews on freight trains, ensuring compliance with FRA rules and railroad regulations.
- 2Place cars to facilitate loading and unloading, and make up or break down trains in rail yards and industrial plants.
- 3Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures, checking for defects and safety issues.
- 4Transmit and receive information by radio and telephone, and interpret bulletins, work orders, and switch lists.
- 5Instruct and assist crews in coupling and uncoupling cars, operating switches, and making minor repairs such as replacing couplings or air brake hoses.
- 6Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars, maintaining operational efficiency.
- 7Maintain situational awareness of the surrounding area and be alert for suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.
- 8Comprehend color and hand signals to coordinate train movements safely.
Requirements10
- 1High school diploma or GED.
- 218 years of age or older.
- 3Valid driver's license.
- 4Ability to perform medium to heavy work, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 83 pounds rarely.
- 5Capability to stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, and climb, including working in cramped spaces.
- 6Willingness to ride on the outside of rail equipment for long periods and walk long distances over uneven terrain.
- 7Demonstrated auditory and visual acuity, including color vision per FRA regulations.
- 8Experience working on-call and in varying shift schedules, with availability 24/7 and ability to report with two-hour notice.
- 9Pass all required assessments, background screening, and post-offer medical exam including drug screen.
- 10Complete annual training and pass safety operating rules examination.
