Farm Crew Chief, Tree Production & Field Operations
Overview
Farm Crew Chief leads tree production field operations at Casey Trees serving the DC area. Owns pruning, irrigation, pest scouting, and crew supervision at scale, coordinating with the Farm Field Manager and other staff. This role drives safe, efficient planting and maintenance across a dynamic outdoor environment. Expect hands-on leadership and opportunities to shape farming practices and youth STEM programs alignment.
What You'll Do10
- 1Build and supervise a field crew to prune, dig, irrigate, harvest, and load trees with a focus on quality and safety
- 2Manage irrigation systems, pest and weed control activities, and routine equipment maintenance to minimize downtime
- 3Inspect trees for insects and disease, recommend and implement corrective treatments, and monitor plant health
- 4Ensure compliance with safety protocols and proper handling of products, tools, and equipment
- 5Direct loading, transportation, and logistics of trees via trucks, trailers, and other equipment
- 6Mentor and evaluate crew performance, provide training on all assigned tasks, and foster teamwork
- 7Oversee inventory and farm structures, and support general facilities maintenance
- 8Verify bill of lading accuracy for shipments and ensure timely and accurate deliveries
- 9Promote a safety culture by reducing hazards and modeling professional behavior
- 10Collaborate with management to communicate challenges and opportunities from the field
Requirements10
- 1One or more years of experience in farming, tree production, horticulture or related field
- 2Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- 3Certified Pesticide Applicator license required within one year of hire
- 4Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills
- 5Ability to work independently or as part of a team and manage multiple activities simultaneously
- 6Experience operating/maintaining farm machinery and equipment, power tools, hand tools
- 7Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours as needed
- 8Ability to work in outdoor conditions year round
- 9Passion for horticulture and tree canopy restoration
- 10Demonstrated leadership or supervision experience is a plus
