Executive Loss Control Specialist, Property & Marine
Overview
You will own loss control for Markel's property, inland marine, and ocean marine portfolios, assessing moderate to high complexity accounts across retail, wholesale, primary, and excess markets. You will partner with Underwriting, Claims, and brokers to select and retain profitable business, while building risk control reports and guidelines. Your technical expertise in fire protection and NFPA standards will drive risk reduction and informed underwriting decisions. What You'll Do10
- 1Partner with Underwriting to select, retain, and grow a profitable book of business across retail, wholesale, primary, and excess markets.
- 2Build and maintain risk control reports, forms, and guidelines to support property loss control growth and standardization.
- 3Conduct on-site, virtual, and desktop risk assessments for moderate to high complex Property, Inland Marine, and Ocean Marine accounts.
- 4Identify and communicate potential risks and control recommendations to reduce loss likelihood and aid underwriting decisions.
- 5Influence customers to implement corrective actions, providing solutions and resources for risk reduction.
- 6Write technically detailed reports that clearly assess risk and articulate actionable recommendations.
- 7Deliver technical training to team members, underwriters, and insureds, and develop technical content.
- 8Support other product lines and conduct multi-line surveys when needed to maximize travel efficiency.
- 9Manage workload independently and document work requests for tracking.
- 10Travel approximately 25% of the time, with additional travel as needed.
Requirements8
- 1Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Risk Management, or Fire Sciences preferred; recognized certifications such as P.E., CSP, ARM, CFPS or willingness to pursue.
- 26+ years combined Property, Inland Marine, and Ocean Marine loss control or risk management experience in retail and/or wholesale markets.
- 3Understanding of Property, Inland Marine, and Ocean Marine coverages including general property, builders' risk, contractors' equipment, motor truck cargo, equipment breakdown, warehouse legal liability, or fine arts.
- 4Experience with low to high hazard occupancies (residential, commercial, industrial) and their controls.
- 5Technical proficiency in NFPA, FM Global, IBC, and evaluating fire protection systems such as automatic sprinklers and special extinguishing systems.
- 6Strong technical skills with risk management software platforms and MS Office.
- 7Understanding of boiler and machinery operations, exposures, and controls.
- 8US Work Authorization required; Markel does not provide visa sponsorship.
