EH&S Specialist (2nd Shift) - Charlotte, NC
Overview
Own all environmental health and safety programs for the 2nd shift at a manufacturing site in Charlotte, NC. 70% of the role is direct safety verification on the operating floor, with authority to stop work or remove equipment. You are the sole emergency medical responder on site, treating injuries and initiating investigations independently. This role also captures off-shift hazards and maintains compliance records, with your written shift record serving as the client's only visibility into the shift. Work a fully onsite contract schedule, with 3+ years of EH&S experience and a current certification for unsupervised medical response.
What You'll Do10
- 1Verify safety compliance through direct observation of equipment and work practices during production, using delegated stop-work authority to remove unsafe conditions immediately.
- 2Conduct scheduled inspections of equipment, systems, and emergency provisions, and maintain inspection records to audit standard.
- 3Use uninterrupted off-shift hours to complete documentation, procedure development, and records work, producing drafts for day-shift approval.
- 4Engage directly with off-shift crews to surface hazards not raised through daytime channels.
- 5Serve as the sole trained emergency medical responder, assessing and treating injuries, and arranging transport or activating emergency services when needed.
- 6Maintain emergency medical and first aid readiness, including supplies, equipment condition, and responder coverage across all areas.
- 7Track occupational health surveillance status for off-shift employees, coordinating required evaluations into core hours.
- 8Identify off-shift tasks and exposures that daytime occupational health misses, and bring them into scope.
- 9Respond to incidents in a dual capacity, securing the scene and capturing evidence, and maintaining objectivity between treatment and investigation.
- 10Produce a written shift record every shift, escalating items requiring management authorization or external coordination without delay.
Requirements8
- 1University degree or equivalent.
- 23+ years of relevant EH&S experience, preferably in manufacturing.
- 3Current certification permitting unsupervised emergency medical assessment and treatment in an occupational setting, with scope confirmed against state licensure.
- 4Ability to work a full shift without supervision, exercising independent judgment on safety and medical decisions.
- 5Sound written communication for shift records that drive regulatory and corrective action decisions.
- 6Ability to stop work or remove equipment from service under pressure without immediate management support.
- 7Ability to maintain objectivity when responding to and investigating the same incident.
- 8Ability to work in an active manufacturing environment, including elevated areas, confined spaces, outdoor conditions, and required PPE.
