Overview

The Design Engineer I leads substation design assignments focusing on physical layout and protection & control systems. This role ensures compliance with safety and construction standards while collaborating with engineers and field personnel. It reports to a Supervising Engineer within a substation design team supporting projects across the QISG platform.

What You'll Do10

  • 1Design physical substation components including yard layouts grounding lightning protection control building arrangements raceways and auxiliary AC DC power systems
  • 2Develop protection and control schematics wiring diagrams cable lists and panel layouts
  • 3Create design drawings calculations and bills of material for planning construction and maintenance
  • 4Conduct engineering calculations such as voltage drop cable pulling flicker analysis and grounding analysis
  • 5Perform quality reviews to identify inaccuracies omissions or compliance issues and suggest improvements
  • 6Collaborate with engineers and project teams to develop solutions and modifications
  • 7Maintain detailed project documentation and support engineering calculations
  • 8Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to stakeholder attention
  • 9Travel out of town for short periods as required by projects
  • 10Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements9

  • 1Bachelor’s degree in electrical mechanical or civil engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • 2Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering FE exam is highly desirable
  • 3Curiosity for learning about substation components
  • 4Previous design or construction experience is highly desirable
  • 5Word processing spreadsheet and email software proficiency
  • 6Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • 7Ability to work in a team environment
  • 8Strong ability to handle ambiguity and prioritize tasks independently
  • 9Experience with relevant industry tools and practices
