Electrical Substation Engineer, High-Voltage Design
Overview
You will own physical substation engineering for mid to large-scale projects at voltages above 138 kV, including 269 kV, 500 kV, and 765 kV. You will collaborate with EPC construction teams and use AutoCAD and MicroStation to deliver accurate, constructible designs. This role sits within a leading power engineering firm with an employee-owned ESOP culture. You will work on complex transmission systems while enjoying a flexible 9/80 schedule and up to 30 work-from-home days yearly.
What You'll Do10
- 1Design physical substations for 138 kV and above, including equipment layout, grounding, and civil-structural coordination.
- 2Develop and review detailed layouts, one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, and control drawings using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical.
- 3Create and modify substation drawings with MicroStation, ensuring accuracy across deliverables.
- 4Support EPC projects by coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders from design through construction.
- 5Coordinate with utilities to align designs with standards and interconnection requirements.
- 6Design raceways, conduit, cable routing, and foundations for substation equipment.
- 7Assist with protection and control (P&C) drawings as needed, maintaining focus on physical design.
- 8Review vendor drawings to ensure equipment compatibility and compliance.
- 9Provide technical input during project meetings to support schedule, constructability, and field execution.
- 10Clarify design intent to construction crews and resolve field questions promptly.
Requirements9
- 14+ years in substation engineering; 3+ years acceptable with a relevant Master's degree.
- 24+ years supporting high-voltage systems at 138 kV and above.
- 3Proven physical substation design experience including station layout, equipment placement, and grounding.
- 4Proficiency with AutoCAD and AutoCAD Electrical for schematics and drawings.
- 5Proficiency with MicroStation for design documents.
- 6Experience with EPC construction projects and utility coordination.
- 7Ability to interpret and produce one-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, and control drawings.
- 8Strong understanding of electric utility practices and high-voltage electrical design.
- 9Detail-oriented with a track record of accurate, constructible deliverables.
