Data Center Construction Project Manager (San Jose)
Overview
This role owns the end-to-end delivery of a building's transformation into a data center in San Jose, covering a 5-7 year timeline from planning to commissioning. You will lead cross-functional teams of engineers, architects, and contractors, while managing budgets and schedules for a high-stakes project. The position requires deep knowledge of power and cooling systems, plus compliance with Uptime Institute Tier standards. You will control risk through mitigation strategies and ensure smooth handover to operations.
What You'll Do10
- 1Define the project scope, goals, and deliverables in the first 30 days, aligning with business objectives and stakeholders.
- 2Build a detailed project plan with timelines, budgets, and resource allocations for the data center conversion, updating it weekly.
- 3Lead cross-functional teams of engineers, architects, and vendors, facilitating daily coordination and removing blockers.
- 4Manage subcontractors for construction, electrical, HVAC, and IT infrastructure installation, ensuring quality and schedule adherence.
- 5Identify risks to timelines, budgets, and technical performance, then implement mitigation plans to keep the project on track.
- 6Control project expenses by monitoring costs against budget, optimizing labor, materials, and equipment use.
- 7Drive timeline adherence by adjusting schedules for delays, ensuring each phase from design to handover completes on time.
- 8Coordinate with vendors for servers, cooling systems, and backup power, and update stakeholders on milestones and scope changes.
- 9Enforce quality assurance for all construction, electrical, and network installations, meeting Uptime Institute Tier and ISO standards.
- 10Supervise the commissioning phase to test power, cooling, and network systems, then hand over documentation and training to operations.
Requirements7
- 15-7 years of project management experience in construction or data center environments.
- 2Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, IT, or a related field.
- 3Proficiency with project management tools like MS Project, Trello, or Asana.
- 4Strong understanding of data center design, including power and cooling systems.
- 5Excellent communication and negotiation skills for stakeholders and vendors.
- 6Knowledge of industry regulations and compliance standards, including data security and energy efficiency.
- 7A certification in project management (PMP or PRINCE2) is a plus.
