Construction Estimating Manager, Commercial Specialties
Overview
You will lead estimating for commercial construction specialty products at International Building Products, Inc., a small subcontracting office in Detroit, MI. You'll manage bid opportunities from ITBs and RFPs to customer quotes, preparing accurate proposals for scopes like Division 10, window treatments, and signage. You'll guide a team of estimators, set standards, and drive bid/no-bid decisions with risk evaluation. Your work directly shapes revenue by securing profitable projects with GCs and owners. This role stands out because you'll own the full estimating lifecycle, from takeoff to handoff, while improving team processes.
What You'll Do10
- 1Lead and manage the estimating process for incoming ITBs, RFPs, negotiated opportunities, and customer quote requests, ensuring all deadlines are met with accuracy.
- 2Review bid documents, drawings, specifications, addenda, alternates, and allowances to determine complete scope of work for commercial specialty products.
- 3Assign, prioritize, and track estimating workload across your team, making sure every bid is completed on time and error-free.
- 4Prepare detailed takeoffs, cost estimates, proposal clarifications, exclusions, and scope letters for construction specialties and related installation work.
- 5Evaluate project fit and provide bid/no-bid recommendations based on timeline, scope, customer requirements, resources, and risk.
- 6Coordinate with vendors, manufacturers, suppliers, and subcontractors to gather pricing, lead times, product info, and technical support.
- 7Review estimator work for accuracy, completeness, scope alignment, and professional presentation before submission to clients.
- 8Maintain estimating data, bid tracking, and customer information in Monday.com CRM and internal project systems.
- 9Communicate professionally with general contractors, construction managers, architects, and customers on scope questions, clarifications, and status.
- 10Support handoff to project management after award, including scope review, materials lists, vendor quotes, and customer commitments.
Requirements10
- 15+ years of construction estimating experience, preferably in commercial construction specialties, architectural products, Division 10, window treatments, or related scopes.
- 2Prior leadership or supervisory experience in an estimating department.
- 3Strong ability to read and interpret architectural drawings, specifications, bid instructions, addenda, and contract documents.
- 4Experience preparing quantity takeoffs, vendor quote requests, scope letters, bid forms, alternates, and exclusions.
- 5Strong understanding of commercial construction workflow, bid schedules, submittals, procurement, lead times, and project handoff.
- 6Excellent written and verbal communication skills with customers, vendors, general contractors, and internal teams.
- 7High attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- 8Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Outlook, PDF review tools, CRM or project tracking systems, and estimating software.
- 9Experience using Monday.com or similar CRM/project management platforms preferred.
- 10Knowledge of commercial construction specialty manufacturers and product lines is a plus.
