Assistant Superintendent - Golf Course Maintenance | Troon
Overview
You will lead daily maintenance operations at Contra Costa Country Club, a Troon-managed private club in Pleasant Hill, CA, with more than 40,000 rounds played annually. You will own scheduling, team leadership, and agronomic execution on bentgrass greens and perennial ryegrass playing surfaces. Working beside the Superintendent and Co-Assistant, you will gain mentorship toward a Superintendent role. The club recently completed a short game facility and maintenance shop expansion, offering a prime setting to develop leadership skills.
What You'll Do9
- 1Lead daily planning, scheduling, and execution of golf course maintenance, directing 25+ team members in a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
- 2Manage irrigation scheduling and water usage, including troubleshooting irrigation systems and adjusting for weather and soil conditions.
- 3Oversee fertilizer and pesticide applications, ensuring compliance with California QAL or QAC regulations and maintaining accurate records.
- 4Coordinate cultural practices such as aeration, verticutting, and topdressing to promote healthy turf on bentgrass greens and perennial ryegrass fairways.
- 5Prepare the course for tournaments and events, including pin placement, tee setup, and course conditioning standards.
- 6Collaborate on short- and long-term agronomic plans with the Superintendent, contributing ideas for course improvement projects.
- 7Participate in Green Committee meetings, presenting maintenance updates and capital improvement recommendations.
- 8Assist with budgeting and capital planning, tracking expenses and equipment replacement needs.
- 9Attend local and national educational events and conferences, staying current with turf management practices.
Requirements7
- 1Degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, or Horticulture
- 2Experience as an Assistant Superintendent, Second Assistant, Spray Technician, or Foreman in golf course maintenance
- 3California Qualified Applicator License (QAL) or QAC, or ability to obtain within six months
- 4Leadership skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team of 25+
- 5Communication skills for coordinating with staff, management, and club members
- 6Organizational skills for scheduling and project management
- 7Passion for developing people and delivering exceptional playing conditions
